Learn more about how to maximize your summer, be better prepared for math, and move forward towards completing your degree.  You will need your score from the  Math Placement Test (MPT) system is called ALEKS PPL. If you log back into ALEKS PPL (instructions can be found here), you can find your score.

We know the cost of college can be expensive, which is why we want to ensure you are aware of these low-cost options for increasing your Math Placement Test score and/or completing a math course over the summer for credit. ASU is here to support you in timely degree completion, and getting a jump-start on math could help save you costs down the road.

Your score is between 61 and 75 on the MPT

The degree program you have selected has an initial math course of MAT 265: Calculus for Engineers. Based on your Math Placement Test score, you placed into MAT 171: Pre-Calculus.  You can utilize the summer months to complete supplemental material on your own. By doing so, you may be able to improve your score on the Math Placement Test and instead enroll in MAT 265: Calculus for Engineer

The Math Placement Test system is called ALEKS PPL. If you log back into ALEKS PPL (instructions can be found here), you can complete modules to improve your mathematical knowledge set as you further develop skills toward pre-calculus or calculus.  After you have worked on these modules for a few weeks, retake the math placement test. This is a very self-paced path and it will require you to be very diligent about putting in the time to complete the modules

If you improve your score to 76 or above, you can enroll in MAT 265, Calculus for Engineers either by changing your schedule on MyASU or by speaking with your academic advisor.

Your score is between 50 and 60 on the MPT

The degree program you have selected has an initial math course of MAT 265: Calculus for Engineers. Based on your Math Placement Test score, you placed into MAT 117: College Algebra. 

The Math Placement Test system is called ALEKS PPL. If you log back into ALEKS PPL (instructions can be found here), you can complete preparatory modules to improve your mathematical knowledge set as you further develop skills toward pre-calculus or calculus.  After you have worked on these modules for a few weeks, retake the math placement test. You can also take advantage of FREE virtual tutoring from the Fulton Schools as you prepare to re-take the MPT. This is a very self-paced path and it will require you to be very diligent about putting in the time to complete the modules

If you are able to raise your score to above 61, you will then be eligible to enroll in MAT 171:  Pre-Calculus.

After retaking the test, you can modify your schedule on myASU or contact your academic advisor for assistance.

Your score is between 30 and 49 on the MPT

The degree program you have selected has an initial math course of MAT 265: Calculus 1. Based on your Math Placement Test score, you have placed into MAT 117: College Algebra. If you are interested in taking MAT 117: College Algebra over the summer to increase your Math Placement Test score and get a jump-start on your math coursework (at potentially no cost to you), please review the information below.

ASU offers MAT 117 as a virtual, self-paced course as part of the Earned Admissions program (Earned Admissions is an ASU program designed for students trying to gain admissions to ASU – you are already admitted – you are simply using their program to help accomplish your goal of accelerating your math coursework). Earned Admissions courses do not have any cost associated with enrolling – simply enroll and complete it at your own pace. While taking the course you are also eligible to access free virtual tutoring from the Fulton Schools. Successfully completing the self-paced course would prepare you to do either one of these options:

  • Retake the Math Placement Test: improve your score to 61 or higher and register for MAT 170: Pre-Calculus for the fall semester. 
  • Earn academic credit: The Earned Admissions program allows you to convert your completed MAT 117 course to college credit. The cost (between now and 8/17/2020) is $99. Earning the credit for MAT 117 would allow you to take MAT 170: Pre-Calculus for the fall semester.  You only need to convert it to college credit if you earn a grade of A, B, or C. 

This is a very self-paced path and it will require you to be very diligent about putting in the time to complete the modules.
